FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How many deck boards do I need for a 12×16 deck?
A 12×16 ft deck has 192 sq ft. Using 5/4×6 boards (5.5″ wide with ⅛″ gaps), you need about 44 boards at 16 ft long. Add a 10% waste factor and you should buy 48–50 boards. Use our calculator above for any deck size.
How do I calculate how many deck boards I need?
Divide your deck length by (board width + gap width in feet). This gives you the number of boards running across the width. Multiply by the number of board lengths needed to cover the deck length. Then add your waste percentage (minimum 10%).
What is the standard joist spacing for decking?
16 inches on center is the standard for most deck boards. Use 12″ OC for diagonal boards or heavier loads. Composite decking manufacturers sometimes specify 12″ OC — always check the manufacturer's guidelines.
How much does it cost to build a deck in 2026?
In 2026, material costs range from $15–$25/sq ft for pressure-treated wood, $35–$60 for composite, and $50–$80 for hardwoods. A 12×16 deck (192 sq ft) in pressure-treated wood costs roughly $3,000–$5,000 in materials. Labor adds another $15–$35/sq ft.
What gap should I leave between deck boards?
Use ⅛ inch (3mm) for kiln-dried or dry lumber. Use ¼ inch (6mm) for green pressure-treated lumber that will shrink as it dries. Never install boards with no gap — moisture has nowhere to go and boards will warp or cup.
How deep should deck footings be?
Deck footings must extend below the frost line, which varies by region. In most northern US states that's 36–48 inches deep. In southern states it may be as shallow as 12 inches. Check your local building codes — our calculator notes the standard 42″ guideline.
